At Halloween 2024, Gothic Opera presented Maria de Rudenz by Donizetti, fully staged with a new arrangement for chamber orchestra, at historic venue Battersea Arts Centre, London. This production was the first time Maria de Rudenz has been staged in the UK.

Maria de Rudenz is inspired by an episode of Matthew Gregory Lewis's gothic novel The Monk, and tells a gory story of deceit, murder, betrayal, and resurrection from the dead. It premiered in 1838 in Venice.

  • “The three principals I heard in this double-cast production brought dramatic fervour and vocal excellence of a standard that easily surpassed the trio who'd sung a day or two earlier at a major London house"
    Mark Valencia, Opera, January 2025

★★★★★ “It’s a fantastic production which deserves to be more widely seen"

★★★★ “The music is as delightful and lyrical as one would expect from Donizetti and, on the basis of this production, it is certainly worth seeing in all its over-the-top Gothic glory"

★★★★ “Congratulations to Gothic Opera for a musically strong and involving performance"
    Mark Aspen
